Clinical and Anatopathological Studies on Cancers of the Large Bowel Among Koreans





Abstract
It has long been regarded that the occurrence of cancer of the large intestine is signicantly influenced by diet. The incidence of cancers of the large bowel in Asian and African countries is lower than that of Europe and America.
There have been several reports on cancer of the large intestine in Korea which focused on clinical and statistical aspects. This study, in that while, has attempted to investigate cancers of the large intestine morphologically and epidemiologically and to compare with previous reports. In this investigation, clinical and histopathological investigations were made on 76 cases of surgically removed cancer of the large intestine who were admitted to Hanyang University hospital during the period of 7 years from 1972 to 1979.
The results were as follows:
1. The ratio of cancer of the large bowel between male and female was 2.8: 1.
2. Age incidence was most prevalent in the 5th decade, comprising 36.8%.
3. The youngest was age of 21 and the oldest age of 79. The average ages of thepatients were 53.7 years old in male and 51. 8 years -old in female. The most frequent symptom was bowel habit change (26.1%) being followed by bloody or tarry stool
(25.0/6), abdominal pain (23.8%) .
4. The cancer of the large bowel was frequent in order among those with history of illness within 3 months (27.4%), 13-36 months (22.6%), 3-6 months (21%), 7-12 months (19.400), more than 37 months(9.7%).
5. Location of cancer of the large bowel was most frequent in the rectum (4-7.8%) and sigmoid colon (20.3%) was next.
6. Grossly, there were fungating type 68.4% in right colon, annular type 47. 1% in left colon, fungating type 57.6%¢¥ and ulcerative type 30.3% in rectum in order.
7. Tumor masses in most cases were measured 3 cm in its dimension and 3 cases ;more than 10 cm.
8. The most common type of cancers was adenocarcinoma (94.7%) .
9. There was no metastasis of regional lymph nodes among cases having neoplastic mass measuring more less 3 cm in dimension.
10. Stage 0 was.not identified in all cases examined.
11. Hypertension was the most frequent associated disease (14.5%) .
12. There were blood group A and 0 33.3% in each, B 23.8% and AB 9.5% in order.
